What does a psychiatrist do?
A psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and management of mental illnesses. Psychiatrists are trained to assess a patient’s symptoms, medical history, and general state of mind to determine the underlying reason for a patient’s mental health issues.
Psychiatrists collaborate with you to create a personalized treatment plan once a diagnosis has been made. Such treatment can take the form of medication, counseling, or a mix of the two. A psychiatrist would keep track of your development to decide if and when any changes to the treatment plan is necessary.
A psychiatrist may also offer counseling and support to you and your family, caregivers, and loved ones to help improve understanding of your condition and how you can be supported.
In addition to treating mental illnesses, a psychiatrist may also communicate with your general practitioner (GP) or other healthcare providers to make sure you get the best possible treatment, care and support for your recovery from mental illness.
Psychiatrists are crucial in the management of mental health issues and disorders. They offer a range of services to support people in managing their mental illnesses, enhancing their quality of life, and reaching their mental wellness goals.
